Netflix is discontinuing its most affordable ad-free subscription tier for users in Canada and the United Kingdom. The streaming giant’s decision to phase out the Basic plan leaves subscribers with three alternatives:
- Standard with Ads ($5.99/month): A new, lower-priced option that includes advertisements.
- Standard ($16.49/month): Likely an ad-free plan, but at a higher cost for former Basic subscribers.
- Premium ($20.99/month): The most expensive tier, offering the full range of features.
The move has sparked frustration among users, who have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction. Netflix has confirmed the Basic plan’s discontinuation through emails to affected subscribers and updates on its Help Center.

The phase-out appears to be occurring in stages, with some users facing deadlines as early as June 8th, while others have until July 13th to make a decision. This rollout strategy suggests that more subscribers may be impacted in the coming weeks.
As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, Netflix’s decision to eliminate its cheapest ad-free option may influence subscriber retention and competition in the market. The company has yet to announce if this change will extend to other regions in the future.
